Sustainability

This event has been intentionally designed as a case study in environmental responsibility, with careful consideration given to minimizing the ecological footprint across all aspects of planning and production. From the outset, we prioritized sustainability throughout all aspects of the event

We used the GCC Carbon Calculator to assess the total environmental footprint of the event. Included here is an estimation of emissions related to the planning and production of the event.

tCO2e Estimate

6.7
Flights
3 x return flights from London to New York made up the majority of emissions related to this event.

To reduce the carbon footprint of the program, five speakers are participating via video link rather than travelling via air. By avoiding three return flights from Los Angeles and two from Western Europe, we estimate a savings of approximately 14 metric tonnes—or 31,000 pounds—of CO₂ emissions — a meaningful step toward reducing the event’s overall impact.
0.24
Catering
Seasonal, local vegetarian food was chosen where possible to reduce impacts related to catering.
0.06
Venue energy use
This is an estimate based on the floorspace taken up by the event. This calculation is therefore only a rough figure but is useful in determining that the venue's energy use is a small part of the project's footprint.
0.02
Transportation of goods
Deliveries were consolidated  using low-emission vehicles where possible.
0.01
Printed material
Limited signage printed on recyclable Falconboard and paper stock. Programmes, schedules, and resources are shared digitally via QR codes.
7.03
Total
This is equivalent to around six months’ worth of emissions for a single average NYC household. To note: the emissions for an average NYC household are around a third lower than the U.S. national average, due to NYC’s denser housing and public transit use.

We hope this approach offers inspiration and practical examples to others looking to embed sustainability into cultural programming.
